Chronic Wasting Disease

November 29, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

BILLINGS — Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold two public meetings in Carbon County Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, to talk about chronic wasting disease, or CWD, in the region’s deer herds.

The meetings are scheduled for:

n The Bridger Civic Center at 5 p.m.

n Mountain View Elementary School in Red Lodge at 7:30 p.m.

During the meetings, FWP wildlife officials will make presentations on CWD and answer questions.

CWD is a progressive, fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and moose. It is a slow-moving disease. However, left unmanaged, it could result in long-term population declines within affected herds.

Two mule deer harvested in Carbon County recently tested positive for CWD – the first ever in the state’s wildlife populations. As a result, FWP formed an incident command team to implement the department’s response, including coordination with landowners and hunters to determine the extent of the disease. Further actions are planned and will be among the topics discussed at the meetings.
